Why You Should Avoid The Mall At All Costs

I recently wrote an article for Your Money, sharing my opinion on why you should avoid going to malls. Here’s a short sample:

The mall can be a dangerous place if you’re trying to cut back on spending.

Everywhere you look, there’s something to buy, eat, see or do. It’s not exactly the most frugal way to spend your time.

Here are 4 reasons why you should avoid the mall at all costs

Not a hard thing to do for me…our mall stinks since Tabi left…if you aren’t a career woman looking for a suit or a teen looking to spend all of your cash, there isn’t much choice! I bet I go to our mall 2x a year or less!

I haven’t gone to the mall much in the last few years since having kids — the good malls are just too far away! I did make it to the mall in the past week or so, and kind of felt like a person could waste a lot of money there on impulse, especially if they were shopping recreationally.

I did make it to HomeSense today (across town from me — the oldest was in daycare), and everywhere I looked, there was something I wanted to buy (okay, maybe almost needed, as we haven’t done much with the new house since moving in last year! I resisted, bought myself some plastic drawer organizers that were on my list, and purchased the two shower gifts and one housewarming gift I needed to buy.

Unfortunately and fortunately I work in a mall. I am able to scope out the good deals (at h&m usually) and only buy when I know I won’t spend a fortune. I also bring in my lunch every day (leftovers from home) to save money and allow myself one treat lunch from the food court every week. I probably only spend about $60 a month max with my strategy at a mall.

I think you just need to have self-control and know your prices. I’ve found awesome deals at a mall, but I know it can also be easy to spend a lot at once. Now that I’ve adopted a more frugal attitude my trips to the mall aren’t as damaging to my wallet… I only go after the best sales! 🙂 I don’t think I could ever avoid the mall altogether… I just love clothes too much!

The main reason I avoid malls? The washrooms! I worked in a mall for 2 years and they were so gross. I don’t understand how…

  6. Katie says:

I also agree with the last two points, I can avoid red sales signs and being a vegetarian I’m limited at the food court. But crowds give me anxiety, and I really hate pushy sales people! I was attacked by a Clarins rep at a Shoppers the other week and almost cried.

I don’t go the mall unless I need something. Shopping out of boredom is not something I have ever done, thankfully!
