I like to talk about money, budgets, food, organizing and lots of other fun stuff!

Niagara Falls 2010

Mar 8, 2010 Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Sunday morning the whole family went on a little field trip (except our kitties, who are content staying home alone). We dropped the dogs off at their babysitters (Maggie at my mom’s house, Buddy at Richard’s mom’s house) and I picked up my sister. Her, Richard, Elliott and I then headed to Niagara Falls for the day/night. Not too long ago I found a great deal online for a hotel for $49.95 per night and get a free $45 gift card to The Keg restaraunt. With taxes and the RIDICULOUS $12 parking fee (we should have done our research and parked at a nearby parking lot for cheaper), it was just under $70 for the night. My sister gave us $20 so that’s $50.

We took the long way so that we could sight-see in Niagara on the Lake, which turned out to be a bad idea because it was so damn busy that the only parking spot we could find was way the hell down the street from all the action. It was also a bad idea because I forgot my jacket and DAMN it was cold outside. Since we were starving, we decided to park and walk really really fast to the closest restaraunt we could find. It turned out to be a cute little bistro that was overpriced. There’s a shocker. Sigh. We ordered food anyway, ate and then made our way to the Falls.

We stopped in at the bird aviary first because they closed at 5 and we wanted to check it out. It was okay, I guess, but like everything else in that city, it cost an arm and a leg for not much more than a tiny glimpse of some birds. That I can see for free in my backyard. Oh well, I think Elliott liked it. I was happy when we were done and I didn’t have to smell bird shit any longer.

at the bird kingdom :)

We checked into the hotel after that and had a little rest. Played with the babe and watched some TV. After that it was dinner time so off we went. The meal was mediocre and the waitress was anything but smart when it came to us paying our bill using multiple gift cards, but we enjoyed ourselves.

We went back to the hotel and hung out some more before feeding Elliott and putting him to bed. I would just like to point out - THAT KID SNORES LIKE HIS FATHER. Okay, so it’s not real snoring. More like loud breathing. And nose whistling. It was hard to get any sleep because every 10 minutes I’d wake up thinking a bird was in our room squealing. Or a dog was in there growling. That’s what it sounded like to me, anyway.

This morning after we checked out of the hotel, we got some breakfast and then went to see the falls. Got some cute pictures and then hightailed it out of there, as the freezing temperature was killing me. Or maybe Richard, since I kind of stole his jacket. Oops.

at the falls!

All in all, it was a good time. It would be nice to go back when the weather is warmer, but I don’t think it will be this year. Maybe when Elliott is a few years older and he can actually play games and understand just what the hell is going on.

PS. Naked babies are SO CUTE. I wonder if they have books with naked baby butts in them. Is it weird that I’m wondering that?

my new favourite photo of the two of us

Walmart and Zellers Shopping Deals

The weather was gorgeous yesterday. Not as nice as this weekend is going to be, but it was still nice. Sweater weather. No winter jackets necessary! My favourite. Elliott and I went to get a few groceries at the store, since I have planned about 5 trips this weekend and I wanted to get some stores out of the way. We went to Walmart and Zellers. Today I have to go to Walmart again (I forgot something), Real Canadian Superstore and Shoppers. This weather has me in a great mood! Come on summer, I know you want to show up soon. I miss you. Long time.

Zellers:
12x Shave Gel @ $1.59 each = $19.08 - 4/$5.00 WUB3 coupons = +.92 (saved = $41.88)
1x Pedigree Dentastix @ $4.99 (FREE coupon wasn’t rung in because cashier put in my 10% discount twice and couldnt void it, if she would have put the FREE coupon in, I would have had overage)
1X Grocery Bag @ .05
Tax @ $2.55 - 10% discount of $2.42 and $2.13 = +$2.00 (saved = $4.55)

Total Paid = $2.12
Total Saved = $46.43

Walmart:
12x Shave Gel @ $1.59 each = $19.08 - 4/$5.00 WUB3 coupons = +.92 (saved = $37.56)

1x Bananas @ $1.24

1x Ziploc Freezer Bags @ $4.97 - $5.00 coupon = +.03 (saved = $5.00)
Tax @ $4.79

Total Paid = $8.40
Total Saved = $65.08

GRAND TOTAL PAID = $10.52
GRAND TOTAL SAVED = $111.51

PS. I just thought you should know that I do not have blackheads. Therefore, I do not need blackhead remover. (Seriously, I hope you don’t mind the ads in the blog sometimes. I need to make some extra income for my fam.)

I’ve had a sudden burst of energy that has lasted two days now. This is good in one way and bad in another. The bad being that I don’t get much sleep because I’m worried that when I wake up, my energy will be gone. I love it when I have energy. It doesn’t happen often and I admit it’s because I rarely exercise and eat like crap. I call it the winter funk. I am always lazy in the winter. No matter how hard I try to get out of that laziness funk, it doesn’t happen. So I’ve just learned to accept it and when spring comes around I bust my ass doing all sorts of workouts. Lots of long walks and swimming (come summer time). We eat alot lighter in the summer too with salads and and things of that nature. I’m thinking by the end of March it will start warming up and I will get that itch to start exercising more and eating better.

I’ve been spending the last two days getting caught up on things around the house that needed to be done. Laundry, cleaning, garbages emptied. I’ve also done some more coupon trades, sent away for a bunch of Mail In Rebates and today I started preparing our taxes. Ugh, taxes. It’s hard for me because I’m self employed. The forms are much different than the regular ones. And by different I mean harder. Or maybe I’m just being lazy again. Either way, I hate doing taxes.

When Richard came home from work tonight we went and bought another stupid microwave from Walmart (don’t ask, it’s a long and boring story that just makes me angry) and while we were there I bought a big box of file folders for my filing cabinet because my current record keeping system is just NOT working. I have crap all over the place in there. It’s a mess. Tomorrow I plan to bring out my sexy label maker and kiss it use it to make labels for the folders and then get all of my paperwork organized. Here’s my to do list:

- Sort all paperwork
- Document all business expenses that are tax write offs
- Document all work related expenses that are tax write offs (hubby)
- Document all other expenses that are tax write offs
- Document all of MY income (hubby’s can easily be done with his T4 slips, I have to add up paystubs and divide by company)
- Figure out a system for storing all tax related papers for 7 years

- Figure out what paperwork exactly I am supposed to be keeping and for how long

I’m going to buy the tax software this weekend and then we can file our taxes and await our cheque in the mail. Cha ching!

Um… anyone looking for a muscle milk review? What the hell?

Pitching in…

I’ve realized lately that I am just not bringing in enough money. I mean, I make ENOUGH that we are comfortable, but I’m sick of being comfortable. I want to be able to do more things and see more places. Plus, summer is going to be here in a few months and I want to do lots of fun things as a family. I simply need to make more cash.

I have an online advertising business that I plan on selling soon because I am not happy with the work. It’s not for me. I need to figure something else out but in the meantime I am doing what I can to help bring some income into this house. The first thing that I decided to do was list some things on Kijiji, Craigslist and Ebay. Well, I haven’t gotten around to Ebay yet but I did put a bunch of stuff on Kijiji and Craigslist. I have made $82 from those things already this week and I have 2 people coming by tomorrow to buy some more stuff. Getting rid of crap AND making money.. now that’s a good thing (right, Martha?). I am still researching other ways to make money from home. If you have any ideas, I’m all ears!

So far I have thought of:
Survey Sites: - This could work if I could find a legitimate company that actually pays and pays well. I will have to look into it.
Swagbucks: - I use Swagbucks ALL THE TIME and I cannot tell you enough how much I love it. Since I joined about 2 months ago I have cashed in points to get $30 in Amazon gift cards! If you have not done so already, SIGN UP TO SWAGBUCKS! You will get 30 Swagbucks just for joining. I promise you will not regret it. I also have a sneaky trick to help you get SB alot faster. ;)

And yeaaaah, that’s about as far as I’ve come. I obviously want to get some more traffic to my website because I have a few ads on it but I SUCK at SEO and would have no idea where to start.

What to do, what to do…

I’ve head there’s big bucks in selling life insurance. But I’ll pass on that one. :)

Shopping Deals (Walmart & No Frills)

Mar 3, 2010 Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

My mom and sister came over this afternoon and it was such a nice surprise. I love it when I have visitors during the week because I am home by myself (with Elliott) most of the day. It’s nice to have some adult conversation. It also doesn’t hurt to have an extra pair of hands around the house.

We, of course, went shopping which was not on my to-do list but I can never turn down a good shopping trip! I’m so glad I went because I found a whole lot of goodies. No protective clothing though. ;) Check it out:

Walmart:
3x Snuggle Fabric Softener @ $5.98 each + tax = $20.27 - 3/MIR = FREE! (saved = $20.27)
12x St. Ives Facial Scrub @ $1.00 each = $12.00 - 12/$1.00 coupon = FREE! (saved = $12.00)
9x Gillette Shave Gel @ $1.27 each = $11.43 - 3/$5.00 WUB3 coupons = +$3.57 (saved = $15.00)
1x Pedigree Dentastix @ $3.88 - FREE coupon = FREE! (saved = $3.88)
Tax @ $1.99

Total Paid = $3.85 (doesn’t add up on here and I’m too tired to figure it out)
Total Saved = $51.15

No Frills:
1x Naan Bread @ $1.00 (saved = .99)
7x Tetley Iced Tea @ $1.00 each = $7.00 - 7/$1.00 coupons = FREE! (saved = approx. $13.93)

GRAND TOTAL PAID = $4.95
GRAND TOTAL SAVED = $66.07

Check out this new Canadian shopping site!

Mar 2, 2010 Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

My good friend Boo just launched a new website for Canadians. It is set up so that you can search for deals by retailers. For example, if you are on your way to Walmart and want to know what deals they have going on at the moment, you just open up the webpage and search for WALMART. Then you will be flooded with all sorts of deals pertaining to that store. This is such a great idea, since it is very difficult to find deals when I’m on my way to the store and I just get frustrated and give up, therefor missing out on some great deals.

Another great thing about this new website is that all of the ads that are on the site… the revenue from them goes directly to the members of the forum. That’s you! By contributing to the website by posting deals, YOU can make money! How awesome is that? I am so excited for this new site. I definetely suggest you check it out, as it is TOTALLY going to be worth your time. Doooooooo it!!

Seven Months

Mar 1, 2010 Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Dear Elliott,
Today you turn seven months old. SEVEN! I think it’s about time you start paying rent, don’t you?

So many great things have happened in the last month. Your top teeth are still slowly coming in, but now you have four of them poking through your gumline. Of course all you want to do is bite me AS HARD AS POSSIBLE, because that just seems like the most fun thing in the entire world, but no. Not happening, sorry. I like my fingers without blood gushing out of them. You’ll have to settle for your toys and teethers and hey - even Daddy’s fingers are okay. I don’t mind one bit! Just don’t try to bite the cats, they bite back. Those nasty little buggers. I know that the dogs wouldn’t mind though. They just love you. All they want to do is LICK LICK LICK and SNIFF SNIFF SNIFF, which makes you squeal in delight for some reason. You’re crazy! Don’t you know they lick their own butts (and sometimes each others’) with those tongues?!

Every day you get a jar full of baby food. So far, we have learned that you absolutely LOVE sweet potatoes, peaches, bananas and prunes. My good friend Erica says if we give you too much banana, you are going to be consipated and then HOLY SHIT THE WORLD WILL END. If you like bananas, you are gonna get bananas, my friend. Everyone can use a little constipation once in awhile, YOU KNOW WHAT I’M SAYING?! *high five* Prunes did some very awful things to your diaper and I will never forget the mornings that I’d go into your room to get you out of your crib and see a giant brown stain on your matress. The prunes are so potent that they LEAKED THROUGH YOUR DIAPER and THROUGH YOUR CLOTHES and took a nice long nap on your crisp white crib sheets. It was pretty disturbing. So far you don’t have any foods that you do not likes except carrots. You despise carrots. You and carrots will never be friends. Any time we would try to feed them to you, you would contort your body as best you could to try to get out of your chair and AWAY FROM THE CARROTS. You hate them so much that you were willing to risk falling flat on your face to get away from them. Oh and they also turned your shit neon orange. Just so you know.

You have been babbling a whole lot more, which has been awesome. You’ll look at us and just say all this random jibberish and you have to be a parent to really understand just HOW CUTE it is to hear someone saying “iiiiiih ehhhh ouuuuuuuuuuuuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii” to you over and over and over again. You still say DADA and up until yesterday, when you said MAMA for the FIRST TIME EVER (be still, my heart), it was the only thing you said other than the jibberish. I don’t think you know who DADA and MAMA are, since you have also said DADA to the cats, the dogs, me, your grandpa and a few of your toys. I have a feeling that this month is going to be pretty huge for your vocabulary.

I just have to point out that you and one of our cats, Missy, are best friends. She follows you everywhere and loves to lie beside you and rub her entire body all over your legs, arms, head and anything else she can get access to. You pet her and hug her and she purrs in delight. She doesn’t even care when you pull her fur (which is a big no no, DIDN’T I TEACH YOU ANYTHING?). She just bites your fingers and you both giggle and then go paint each others finger nails and talk about boys. Oh wait, that’s ME and Missy. Anyway, you have a very loving relationship and I just know that she thinks you are the best human being in the world and you think she is the bestest kitty that ever lived. Max and Dewey, our other cats, can’t be bothered with you. Don’t worry, they can’t be bothered with anyone but themselves. They are just antisocial. And possibly homosexual. With each other.

I think the best thing that happened this past month (besides the MAMA thing) is that you learned to sit on your own, unsupported. We still put a pillow behind you in case you topple over, which has happend many times and ended with a THUD and scream, but you are doing very well. You sit up and play with your toys ALL BY YOURSELF. Which is not only the cutest thing I have ever seen, but a huge relief because I can get some stuff done around the house while you play. I don’t think you have a favourite toy, but the ones you play with most often are your mirror (you like to chew on it), Mr.Elmo who whos tummy plays the theme song from Sesame Street, Mr. Elephant, your walker, your school bus that has little people inside (who’s heads you just love to chew on, and a little rubber toy elephant that your dad and I have lovingly nicknamed Stanley. He’s cute. You also like to bounce around in your little jumperoo, which your Aunt Amanda so kindly loaned to us. I don’t think you want to give it back. Maybe we will hide it in the basement and say we were robbed and all they took was the jumperoo. Hey, it’s possible!

You can stand up if you are leaning on something or we are holding your hands. We can tell you walk to walk SO BAD and it’s just so adorable. You show no interest in crawling. Skip that boring crap, let’s move right from sitting to standing. Then walking! Oh my. You love leaning on the couch. Your dad or I will sit on the floor behind you, for when your legs eventually give out and you fall backward, and you just lean on the couch and smack the hell out of the cushion. I can see how that would be exhilarating.

Elliott, you are the most amazing person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I can’t wait to see what the future hold for you and for us as a family. I love you!

Love,
Mama

Richard’s surgery went well. He came home and asked for a rag and then proceeded to wipe blood out of his hair. It doesn’t get sexier than that, my friends! His ears are bandaged up until tomorrow, when he will begin his routine of washing them 4 times a day. I’ve taken the liberty of shooting some photos so you can see befores, durings and afters. You can thank me later.

Richard needed the Tylenol and bandages for his ears after surgery, and this was the cheapest we could get them for.

Walmart:
6x St. Ives @ $1.00 each = $6.00 - 6/$1.00 coupons = FREE! (saved = $6.00)
1x Bandages @ $4.64
1x Tylenol @ $3.27

Hey, I can put my pinky finger through your ears!

Feb 22, 2010 Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Right now Richard is on his way to a plastic surgeon’s office to get his ears done. A few years ago when he was in a metal band, he had this crazy idea to stretch his earlobes. I hope you know what I mean, because I just ate breakfast and don’t wish for it to come back up by explaining how earlobe stretching works.

Most people at his job don’t really care about his giant earlobe holes, but one guy in particular really thought Richard’s ears were holding him back in his career. Which is probably true, unfortunetely. This guy cares so much about Richard’s career, that he is actually footing the bill for the surgery! What a nice lad.

So, Richard is on his way there now. The doctor said he can drive himself home and that he shouldn’t feel any pain. We both trust this doctor 100% because he’s actually the doctor I had when I got my nose and knockers done. At the same time, because I’m a trooper. He will not be put to sleep but will have a local anesthetic so that he can’t feel the cuts they make in his ears. EWWWW! I don’t believe I would want to be awake during something like that, even if I couldn’t feel pain. You still see that knife and you totally know what’s going on. Barf.

I can’t wait to see his new ears. If they look good enough, I’ll take them out for dinner. And maybe even let them go beyond first base.

So I will spend the next hour worrying about him and checking out this list of car insurance companies because our company sucks!

Holiday’s ruin my plans!

Last night was supposed to be my awesome recycle bin picking night but GUESS WHAT. It DID NOT HAPPEN. Erica came over and I could swear she was more excited than I was - that girl loves picking through other peoples’ trash, I don’t know why. Anywho, around 7pm I saw that no one on my street had their garbage out so I took a short drive around the neighbourhood to see if, perhaps, my neighbours were just lazy. Out of over 100 houses, only 8 of them had trash out. I came back home all flustered. By 9:30 the only garbage outside was my own. Richard then bluntly told me that garbage night would be Thursday night because Monday was a holiday. WHAT. THE. HELL. I may or may not have said some very bad words and then stomped out of the room.

Stupid garbage. Stupid coupons. Stupid stupid stupid. I spent the rest of the night mad at myself because I had FORGOTTEN WHAT NIGHT GARBAGE WAS SUPPOSED TO GO OUT. I have issues.

I’m going to attempt to go out tonight but we’ll see. I’m still mad at the garbage men in their smelly trucks so I may not go recycle bin picking JUST TO SPITE THEM. Yeah, we’ll see how they like that!

Now please excuse me while I go take my daily vitamins for women. I should probably get myself some crazy pills as well. Or maybe not. I like to keep things interesting.

Yesterday was good. I had my to-do list written and was ready to get the ball rolling. I checked alot of boxes. Cleaned desk, blogged, get files off old computer. And then that’s where I suddenly got a giant burst of energy. Not just ANY energy though. Decorating energy. I wanted to hang stuff and paint things and move furniture around. Here is what I did:

Hung one of my most favourite photos on the staircase landing:

Hung some artwork in one of the many corners of my kitchen:

Added a lamp to one of the end tables in the living room and hung some small mirrors above the table:

Moved the microwave off the countertop a> kitchen counter

It’s very bizzare when I get these bursts of energy only for decorating. But I will take them and run with them when they do happen because it’s not something that happens often, unfortunetely.

Something else that’s bizzare? Elliott likes prunes!
somebody likes prunes!

My boy is gonnabe big and strong! No muscle builder supplement here. RIGHT. Like I would give that to my BABY. Weirdo.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Where do you get coupons? I get them everywhere. Online printables, in-store tearpads, sometimes flyers will have a coupon booklet with a few coupons in it, emailing companies and asking for coupons, trading coupons with others, etc.
How do you get so many? I do alot of coupon trades. If I want a certain coupon really bad, I will post a request asking if anyone has that coupon, to send me a message. I get alot of trades done this way. Trading is awesome!
Any advice to a newbie couponer? My only advice would be to stick with it. It's very time comsuming and frustrating in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, it's very easy and definetely worth the time.
